Grass Profits

Profit for the farmer is the main focus of the grazing based systems used in New Zealand. It's a system that can absorb the year-to-year variations in pasture growth, and has allowed New Zealand farmers to maintain profitability in the face of falling pay-out prices and the complete removal of subsidies. This has been achieved by working from a strong scientific base, to develop methods and technologies based on pasture which give the farmer the tools to improve profit. >> more

Excellence

The publication of New Zealand Agricultural Excellence is to demonstrate to world markets the competitive position of New Zealand pastoral agriculture and the technology that supports it. >> more

Newsletter - December 2007

IN THIS ISSUE:

From the CEO's desk

The CBA Consulting team here at NZ Agritech Inc. is hard at work putting together a calendar of events, trade shows, networking meetings and seminars for 2008.

However, as joint chief executive David Powell said at the AGM and Conference: “What members get out of NZ Agritech Inc. (or any group or club) is proportional to what they put in”.

Early next year we will be posting a full calendar of events on the http://www.agritech.org.nz website – please watch out for this and let us know as soon as possible what events, particularly in regard to the trade shows and missions – you plan to support. We need an idea of numbers as soon as possible.

Just as important, will be the regional networking meetings and seminars in Christchurch , Hamilton , Auckland and Tauranga – but we're going to need regional coordinators (people who are passionate about what we can achieve when we work together as an industry) to help us pull these off successfully.

If you can help as one of several regional co-ordinators, please email me: colin.kennedy@cba.co.nz

We hope that several people in each region put their hand up and, in this way, we can ensure that only minimal effort is required to make this a success.

Finally, what kind of business information do you need? What will bring you to the seminars? For example, one of our first seminars will be on: “ HOW AGRITECH COMPANIES CAN BENEFIT FROM THE GOVERNMENT'S R&D TAX CREDIT”.

But there are other issues and challenges you face in your business that you would like to hear more on – let us know so we can get an idea of what's important to you.

Your participation, thoughts, ideas and feedback are welcome – please email me on colin.kennedy@cba.co.nz

Best wishes

Colin Kennedy

NZ Agritech Inc. AGM and Conference

The way forward

The Annual AGM and Conference of NZ Agritech Inc. in Hamilton at the end of November attracted 51 members who came to network, socialise and to hear about what's in store for the organisation in 2008.

After a welcome by Chairman Jim Grennell, joint chief executive David Powell and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Sector Manager – Agritech and Biotech, Mark Hazeldine, gave a well received presentation on “Making the Most of Government Business Funding: a Guide to Getting Grants”.

A copy of the presentation is available upon request from colin.kennedy@cba.co.nz

After the official business – which included the election of new faces to the NZ Agritech Inc. Board, a further presentation followed from CBA Consulting on “New Zealand Agritech Inc: The Way Forward – Survey Results and Strategy Review”.

As a result of the survey and strategic review, priorities for the organisation in the New Year, include:

  • Greater visibility and effectiveness;
  • Membership growth, critical mass;
  • Obtain more sponsors and sponsor benefits for members;
  • Re-engage with stakeholders;
  • Tell the story;
  • Revisit the Strategic Plan; and
  • NZ Agritech Inc to be known for its energy, innovation, thought leadership and results-focus.
  • Onshore priorities, based on member surveys, interviews and wider consultation, will entail:
  • Enhanced networking opportunities;
  • Driving opportunities around NZ Fieldays;
  • Government lobbying; and
  • Helping companies understand the grant process and where NZ Agritech fits in.
  • Offshore priorities are:
  • Continued participation in popular Trade Shows – increasing member numbers and benefits;
  • Arranging the Hortitech Sub-Group USA Initiative;
  • A commercial mission to a key strategic market e.g. Chile or Central/Eastern Europe;
  • A “New Exporter” Initiative to Victoria , Australia ; and
  • NZ Fieldays Inward Buyer Initiatives

During his presentation, David emphasised that what members get out of the group (or any group or club) is proportional to what they put in.

“We welcome ideas and input and we urge you to take up opportunities presented to you - network fiercely and think outside the square,” he said.

A copy of the presentation is available upon request from colin.kennedy@cba.co.nz The AGM and Conference ended with a buffet dinner and a presentation by former All Black and farmer, Mark ‘Bull' Allen.

Honoured at the dinner for their outstanding contribution to the New Zealand Agritech industry, David Jobe (Jobe Valves Ltd) was presented with the Robin Davidson Memorial for Agritech Exporter of the Year.

Shouldn't you be at EuroTier?

EuroTier 2008 – Europe 's leading agricultural show – is a real opportunity for Agritech members to showcase their products and services, but co-operation and preparation will be needed to make the 11 – 14 November 2008 event a profitable one.

NZ Agritech Inc members who could benefit from this opportunity should consider a joint effort organised by NZ Agritech Inc to make sure they secure a very good site and benefit from shared costs, labour and ideas for maximum impact.

Members who think they will benefit from EuroTier 2008 and who would like to be there, should send expressions of interest to Colin Kennedy at colin.kennedy@cba.co.nz
