>> Information on pasture seed varieties and Animal Feed Suppliers New Zealand (NZ)
Whether it is feeding adult animals starting with the planting of seeds, or feeding very young animals milk by means of mechanical devices, you can be sure it is backed by experience and innovation.
New Zealand's pasture-based farming system is dependent upon the extended growing seasons of a number of pasture plants. This has been achieved through the efforts of a succession of New Zealand plant breeders. Modern techniques are employed to not only extend the growing seasons, but to increase year-round yields and increase resistance to diseases and weeds. Genetic improvement programmes are still ongoing, with spectacular results.
Whilst the New Zealand system's ideal is all-year-round grazing, there is often still a mid-winter food gap to plug. Hay and silage play their part, but so do a range of specialist fodder crops. Plant breeders have improved fodder crops, all suited in varying ways to the task of plugging the feed gap in different localities.
Not surprisingly, for a country like New Zealand, with its range of climates, topography and soil types, there are literally hundreds of lines of seeds – pasture varieties of grasses, legumes and herbs, or fodder varieties of choumollier, turnips, swedes and others.
The rearing of calves on a large scale is a feature of dairying in New Zealand. The feeding systems for these calves incorporate innovations that induce suckling as nature intended for the production of saliva so necessary for the correct pH, enzyme and antibody levels.
Feeding systems also boast a range of operational features that enable the daily job to be done in a streamlined fashion with a minimum of labour input. It is not unusual to see 30 calves at a time feeding off a motorbike-drawn "carriage".
