New Zealand has been a supplier in the world Livestock export business for well over 100 years, and in more recent years, anything from high value breeding stock of 1 head to over 120,000 head of slaughter sheep in one consignment.
This Livestock Export Industry from New Zealand has traditionally centred a round the export of Dairy Heifers into countries in South East Asia, Latin America and more recently to China During the past twelve months New Zealand would have exported in access of 70,000 head of Dairy Heifers to these markets.
New Zealand has also been a breeder of a tropical dairy animal being the Holstein Friesian and Sahiwal cross which has proved to be an excellent dairy animal in a tropical environment.
Sheep for breeding have also played a part in the Livestock Export industry but these numbers have been small compared to a number years ago of sheep slaughter to the Middle East until this trade was ceased from New Zealand.
Animal Welfare is a high priority in the exporting of Livestock from New Zealand and every consignment that is sent from New Zealand has to meet very high standards in Stock selection, shipping criteria, import protocol requirements and these are controlled by accredited inspection agencies and the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture.
Livestock exporters must be registered with New Zealand Food and Safety Authority and all exporters are then accessible on the Ministry of Agriculture website.
