They range from mobile sheep yards, automatic drafting devices, crush bales for immobilising animals, crush devices for tipping animals, to electronic on-the-move weighing and automated data recording systems. Critical to the philosophy of ongoing performance improvement, and indeed routine management, is animal identification. Prolonged and intense innovation in this area has resulted in the best in terms of durability, visibility and permanence of the eartags themselves, as well as the ease and safety of application. Also, of course, back-up systems such as inner-ear tattooing are well developed. The challenges of the future are being met as electronic identification and traceability issues come to the fore.
